Gala Apple Tree Starts

Last fall, I experimented with attempting to start some apple seeds. The plan is that you freeze them for a week or two, then put them in a plastic bag with some wet paper towels. I tried with half a dozen species of apples.

It was a miserable failure. Not a one sprouted. I tossed them out.

It turns out that when I tossed them out, I missed one. It's been sitting on a shelf in the greenhouse all winter long. Today, I found it: they'd sprouted!

That's an ugly mess. They had wound their roots through the soggy towel, and were pretty difficult to separate.

I salvaged nine of them. I was pretty impressed.

I'm going to try to grow trees, and grow apples on those trees. We'll see how that goes.
